Testing for infectious diseases can be a slow, complex and resource-intensive process. Intu Diagnostics is transforming the diagnostic landscape with fast, affordable and easy-to-use diagnostic solutions which anyone around the world can use to test themselves.

Born at the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology (IZI) in Leipzig, this start-up has a clear vision: With the help of its all-in-one device based on an innovative new technology, it wants to make sustainable high-level testing for multiple diseases accessible to as many people as possible.

‘Life science hub’ is a term that describes Leipzig well, and Intu Diagnostics has taken full advantage of this environment on its journey from initial idea to thriving start-up:

  • As a spin-off of Leipzig’s Fraunhofer IZI, the institute was instrumental in supporting the company with its state-of-the art laboratory infrastructure and broad range of scientific R&D know-how directly on site
  • Intu Diagnostics was also supported within the framework of the Fraunhofer AHEAD program, one of Europe’s premier technology transfer programs. It enables founders to benefit from Fraunhofer technology and helps bring innovative high-tech products to market.

In addition to this innovation-friendly atmosphere, the young company benefitted from Leipzig’s openness to entrepreneurs. For example, it was quickly able to develop fruitful partnerships with everything from suppliers to logistics companies to sales experts.

Intu Diagnostics’ solutions will enable anyone, anywhere, at any time, to perform highly sensitive tests for multiple infectious diseases. These will be easy to use and interpret, affordable, eco-friendly, and will meet the lab standards of conventional tests.

Work on the innovation which was to drive Intu Diagnostics’ founding began in 2014. The now patented chemical heating technology allows amplification and identification of pathogens from biological samples – the test setup serves as a platform technology for multiple infectious agents. An initial low-cost test to detect upper respiratory tract infections or tuberculosis could cut testing time to <30 minutes.
