Leipzig University’s first Cluster of Excellence is receiving multi-year government funding to research common metabolic disorders.
The Excellence Commission of the German federal and state governments has designated Leipzig University’s research cluster on metabolic disorders as a ‘Cluster of Excellence’ – a first for the university. The German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German Council of Science and Humanities (WR) announced that beginning in 2026, the Leipzig Center of Metabolism (LeiCeM) will be receiving multi-million-euro funding over the coming years. The Cluster is a collaborative effort between the University of Leipzig Medical Center, the Leipzig Heart Center, the Leipzig-based Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity, and Vascular Research (HI-MAG), as well as Max Planck and Fraunhofer Institutes.

The scientists in Leipzig are already conducting world-class clinical research on understanding and improving the burden of disease caused by metabolic disorders. They will now be able to intensify their studies into conditions like obesity, diabetes, and fatty liver disease. These common illnesses are often associated with serious secondary diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, organ failure, and neurodegenerative disorders. The researchers will also be taking a closer look at the individual causes of disease such as genetic predispositions, early childhood influences, sex-specific differences, and mental health. One goal is to develop more targeted diagnostics and personalised treatment plans to improve patient outcomes.
