Leipzig’s new MITCenter wants to help get medical innovations to patients faster

Many companies don’t have the clinical experience to assess whether their medical innovations are practical and effective. This is where Leipzig’s newly established MITCenter steps in. Because of its close ties with Leipzig University Hospital, new technologies can be tested in real healthcare settings before they are widely introduced. The MITCenter supports companies across the entire innovation process, from scientifically validating an idea to helping with the finished product’s market launch.

 

The leadership team includes Prof. Thomas Neumuth, who has decades of experience with collaborative ventures through his work at the Innovation Center for Computer-Assisted Surgery (ICCAS). The MITCenter has already been developing practical solutions to improve patient care. One example is the MediCubeX, a self-service diagnostic booth which can perform an ECG and automatically measure a patient’s vital signs. Patients could potentially use it before seeing their doctor, thereby making more effective use of waiting times.

 

Currently, the MITCenter is focused on identifying promising clinical discoveries, supporting regulatory approval processes, and connecting with industry partners – both locally and across Germany. It will serve as a hub for students, early-career researchers, and practitioners in the fields of data science, environmental engineering, and medical technology. And as a key player for technology transfer, networking, continuing education, and hands-on project work, the MITCenter is set to become a nexus for medical innovation in Central Germany.
