Construction work has begun on a new central building, with the aim of improving efficiency and enhancing patient care. In future, the hospital’s pavilions could become an extension of Leipzig’s Bio City.

St. Georg Hospital has been emblematic of Leipzig’s patient-centric healthcare services for more than 800 years. Now the City of Leipzig is renewing its commitment to the clinic’s future by fast-tracking a transformative modernization project. The hospital’s outdated and decentralized pavilions are being replaced by the ‘Central Building II’, which will offer all the amenities of state-of-the-art healthcare infrastructure. By consolidating services into one central location, the goal is to improve operational efficiency and enhance patient care.

New building will offer advanced care options

Scheduled for completion in 2029, the new building will be the hospital’s central entrance and offer almost 40,000 m2 of floor space across five stories. The ground floor will house Saxony’s largest emergency room for children and adults, together with specialized treatment rooms for heart procedures and stroke care. The first floor will accommodate an intensive care unit with more than 90 beds, including dedicated stroke and chest pain units. The upper floors will feature advanced cardiology, neurology, oncology, and pediatric departments, including a neonatal aftercare unit and pediatric dialysis.

Commitment to excellence for patients and staff

The AMPEL platform has also been established at Dresden University Hospital as part of a research project, with the aim of finding out whether and how it might be implemented at other hospitals. This project is being supported with funding from the Free State of Saxony amounting to around one million Euros.

Bio City: Old pavilions may get new lease on life (sciences)

Once the new central building is completed, the question is: What to do with the old pavilions? As listed buildings they enjoy special protections, i.e. they can’t just be torn down. But the City of Leipzig has already come up with an exciting idea for repurposing these historic structures. Inspired by international models, the City is considering turning them into a hub for life science start-ups. Since the Bio City at the Alte Messe is bursting at the seams, this would be a perfect opportunity to create more space for innovation. A win-win for young entrepreneurs – and for Leipzig!
